Sub-contract friction welding services

Our facility is one of the biggest in Europe, efficiently handling small and large productions runs on a versatile range of friction welding machines. With forge capacities from 3-150 tons offering linear or rotary process capabilities, these machines can join a wide variety of components for many different applications. Other services available include component development and weld trials, destructive and non-destructive testing, metallurgical analysis and material suitability advice. Our-on-site metallurgy consultancy is provided by Professor Kameel Sawalha who has moved his independent laboratory business, Aston Microscopy & Engineering, to our Halesowen premises.

Friction welding provides parent material bonds across a vast array of similar and dissimilar metals. It is a popular joining method used by some of the world's biggest component manufacturers because it's a cost-effective, accurate and repeatable technology. Typically, the process requires minimal part preparation and can accommodate a range of geometries. Common material combinations include stainless steel to medium carbon steel, copper to aluminium and aluminium to steel.

More than 800 Thompson friction welding machines are in use around the world by top OEMs and Tier 1 manufacturers including models specially designed for not only joining truck axles, drill pipes and rods but also hydraulic cylinders and piston rods. The renowned range is produced at the same facility and supported by services including after-sales technical support, machine maintenance, equipment spares and operator training courses.
